What is the maximum length of a domain name?

Admin Publishes 2025-02-18 2 min read

Overall Domain Name Length Limitation

According to the regulations of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the total length of an entire domain name (including subdomains, main domain, and TLD) is limited to within 253 characters. This regulation ensures the flexibility and scalability of the Domain Name System (DNS), providing ample room for creative naming.

Single Label Length Limitation

According to the DNS protocol standard (RFC 1035), a DNS domain name consists of multiple labels separated by periods (.) . The maximum length of a single label is 63 characters. This means that in each part of the domain name (such as subdomains, main domain, etc.), the length of any individual part cannot exceed 63 characters.

Special Domain Name Length Situations

Root Domain Names: Top-level domains such as “.com” and “.net” are not included in the overall 253-character limit for domain names. However, they also have their own length restrictions. It is said that the maximum length of a root domain name can reach up to 67 characters, but this may vary depending on different domain registrars and regulations.

Chinese Domain Names: When registering Chinese domain names, the length of each level of the domain is limited to 26 valid characters (including Chinese characters, English letters a-z and A-Z, numbers 0-9, and the hyphen “-”, each counting as one character). Additionally, Chinese domain names cannot be purely English or numeric; they must contain at least one Chinese character.

Practical Considerations

Although theoretically a domain name can be up to 253 characters long, in practical applications, most domain holders prefer shorter domain names due to factors such as browser compatibility, user experience, SEO optimization, and cost maintenance. Shorter domain names are easier to remember and type, and they may also perform better in DNS resolution processes.
